New Delhi: As Monkeypox is spreading rapidly in the world, the centre has issued asked National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to keep a close watch on the situation.

The government has also asked to send samples of travellers with symptoms of monkeypox to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for further testing.

''The situation of monkeypox abroad should be closely monitored. If certain symptoms are seen then samples should be sent to NIV,'' ANI said quoting government sources.

So far no case of this infection has been reported in India. But, people in Britain, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and America have been found infected with the infection. On the other hand, Canada, Australia and France are also scanning possible patients of this disease.

Monkeypox spreads from animals to humans and cases are increasing rapidly in Europe and North America.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has called an emergency meeting on the latest situation of monkeypox.
