New Delhi: The Union Commerce Ministry on Tuesday announced notified new rules for Work From Home (WFH) in companies operating in special economic zones (SEZ) across the country.

The Department of Commerce has notified a new rule 43A for WFH in Special Economic Zones Rules, 2006.

"As per the new notification, WFH may be extended to a maximum of 50% of employees including contractual employees of the unit. There is flexibility granted to development commissioners (DC) of SEZs to approve a higher number of employees for any bonafide reason to be recorded in writing," the ministry of commerce and industry said in an official statement.

Notably, the rules have been framed on demand from the industry to make a uniform WFH policy across all Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

However, the new rule provides work from home for a certain category of employees of a unit in SEZ.

The section of employees for which work from home rules have been issued are employees of IT/ITeS SEZ units; employees who are temporarily incapacitated; employees who are travelling and who are working offsite.
