Guwahati: In a shocking incident, a 22 year old woman from Shillong was allegedly burnt by her boyfriend when she refused to lend him Rs 2,000 in Burail, Chandigarh. He reportedly doused her in hand sanitizer and set her ablaze using a lighter.

The accused is identified as Naresh from Burail. He was arrested to judicial custody on Saturday. The 22-year-old survivor from Shillong had sustained 20% burn injuries after Naresh threw sanitizer on her face and used a lighter to burn her on the intervening night of July 6 and 7. Later, neighbours learnt about the incident and rushed her to a local hospital.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the woman had relocated to Chandigarh to Shillong in December of 2019. She bonded with Naresh from Burail and they began living together. The survivor filed a police complaint against Naresh after she got discharged from the hospital and complained that she was often tormented by her boyfriend for money.

On the basis of the complaint, the police have booked Naresh under IPC sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation).
