Chaos in Lok Sabha after scuffle broke out between members of BJP and Congress

NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha was adjourned until Tuesday after a scuffle broke out between members of BJP and Congress.

Members of both parties pushed and shoved each other.

When the House met at 2 pm, members of opposition started shouting slogans from the well and went into the area of treasury benches. They wanted the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah. The opposition party members were also carrying black banners.

Members of BJP reacted to this and the entire episode spiraled out of control. The House was adjourned twice—once at 3 pm and then again at 4 pm.

Members of opposition also tore papers in the house which was strongly condemned by the BJP.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi accused the opposition members for disrupting proceedings in the house. He also accused the Congress of anti-Sikh riots in 1984.

"I am personally pained at the developments in the House. You are not pained. I do not want to run proceedings under such circumstances.... Everybody should deliberate to ensure that the dignity of the House is maintained, “speaker Om Birla said.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman moved the Direct Tax Vivad Se Vishwas Bill, 2020 for consideration amid the ruckus.

It is important to note that, just a few days ago a Congress delegation led by party interim chief Sonia Gandhi had met President Ram Nath Kovind and submitted a memorandum over the violence in Delhi. The party urged the President should intervene in the matter and sought the removal of Home Minister Amit Shah.

“Constitutional Office you hold, that the life, liberty, and property of the citizens is preserved, secured and protected. We also reiterate that you should immediately call for the removal of the Home Minister given the gross ineptitude, abdication of duty and his inability to contain the situation.” said the memorandum.

The Congress had also alleged that instead of taking active steps to remedy or diffuse the situation, the Central Government, as also the newly elected Delhi Government, have remained mute spectators as completely mindless rage, designed violence and organized looting of property, has continued unabated.
