Former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had resigned after a section of the Punjab Congress MLAs put pressure on the party demanding a change in the state leadership. This section of MLAs also included Charanjit Singh Channi.
Charanjit Singh Channi was also the leader of opposition in the Punjab assembly from 2015 to 2016. He joined the ministry as a Punjab Cabinet Minister in 2017.
