CID to probe Nandigram Incident where CM Mamata Banerjee suffered injury

KOLKATA: As per latest developments the Nandigram incident wherein West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee suffered an injury in her ankle has been taken over by the Criminal investigation Department.

As per reports, the West Bengal CID has taken over the investigation of the Nandigram incident. A team of CID officers will soon be visiting the spot in the Purba Medinipur district and record statements of the witnesses,

The CM on March 10 sustained injuries during a road show, which the TMC has alleged as an "attack" on the party supremo. Following the incident, a delegation of the TMC met the Election Commission of India ECI and demanded a probe into the alleged attack. Moreover, the opposition including the BJP and the Congress termed that the incident was made up and was an attempt to gain the sympathy of the people ahead of the polls. They further demanded a probe to clarify the matter. Accordingly, EC sought a detailed report on the incident from the state government and appointed two poll observers for the state.

However, the EC ruled out allegations made by the TMC and said that the injury was 'accidental' and there is no evidence of an attack on the Bengal chief minister.

As per the reports available with the EC arrived at its conclusion via a video footage and accounts of eyewitnesses, that also includes police officials and TMC members.

It needs to be mentioned here that the EC had earlier removed the security in-charge of Banerjee Vivek Sahay and also placed him under suspension with immediate effect. Following the removal of Sahay, Banerjee came down heavily on the EC accusing the commission for working at the behest of BJP.

Banerjee will be contesting from Nandigram constituency against her former close aide-turned-bete noire, Suvendu Adhikari who will be contesting the election on a BJP ticket.

She suffered injuries after she filed her nominations and was addressing a rally at Purba Medinipur.
