New Delhi: For every India citizen, November 26 is a very special day because on this day, the Constituent Assembly of the country duly adopted the constitution. It is the Constitution which makes us realize the feeling of a free citizen of a free country.

The Fundamental Rights given in the constitution protect us and our rights by becoming our shield, at the same time it also remind us of our responsibilities duties. Every year 26 November is celebrated as Constitution Day in the country and on the other hand 26 November is also known as National Law Day.

The present Constitution was duly adopted by the Constituent Assembly of the country on 26 November 1949. However, it was implemented on 26 January 1950.

When the decision was taken to celebrate Constitution Day?

In 2015, on the 125th birth anniversary year of Dr. Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment had notified the Central Government's decision to celebrate this day as 'Constitution Day' on 26 November. This day is celebrated to promote the sense of respect among the citizens for the constitutional values.

The longest constitution in the world

Notably, the Indian Constitution is the longest written constitution in the world. Many parts of it are taken from the constitutions of the United Kingdom, America, Germany, Ireland, Australia, Canada and Japan. It describes the fundamental rights, duties, role of the government, powers of the Prime Minister, President, Governor and Chief Minister of the citizens of the country. Apart from these, it's also describes the work of the legislature, executive and judiciary, what is their role in running the country, all these things are mentioned in the constitution.

How long it took to prepare the Constitution?

It took 2 years, 11 months and 18 days to prepare the complete constitution. It was completed on November 26, 1949. This Constitution of the Republic of India came into force on 26 January 1950.

Original copies of constitution

The original copies of the Constitution of India were written in two languages, Hindi and English. They are still kept safe in the helium filled boxes in the Parliament of India. The

284 members signed constitution

The hand-written constitution was signed by 284 members of the Constituent Assembly on January 24, 1950, including 15 women. Two days later, from January 26, this constitution came into force in the country.

Constitution divided into 25 parts

Originally, the Indian Constitution had a total of 395 articles (divided into 22 parts) and 8 schedules, but as a result of various amendments, at present it has a total of 470 articles (divided into 25 parts) and 12 schedules. Fundamental rights are described in the third part of the constitution.
