Tirupur: A couple from Tirupur district's Kangeyam sold their three-month-old baby boy for Rs 10,000 as they were out of work. A 22-year-old woman, who is a native of Aarapalayam in Madurai district, married a man named N Murugan around seven months ago. They sold their three-month-old baby to Viswanathan and his wife, V Vijaya for Rs 10,000. The police arrested the infant's mother and the couple they sold the baby to. However, they could not arrest Murugan as he went into hiding.

The baby boy was rescued by Kangeyam all-women police.

The infant's mother separated with her first husband seven months ago and married Murugan. She was working in a textile mill in Tirupur, and her husband was an earthmover driver. Both of them were out of work due to the lockdown. So, they decided to sell the infant to earn some money to lead their life.

The other couple, to whom the baby was sold, did not have a child in their 20 years of married life. They offered Rs 10,000 to buy the baby boy.

When the child was given to Viswanathan on Tuesday, the ChildLine, an NGO which works for children across the country, got information about the sale of the infant. A member of the NGO, P Madhavan lodged a complaint with the Kangeyam all-women police. Inspector Hemlatha registered a case against both the couples under section 81 of Juvenile Justice (care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.

The infant's mother was sent to a shelter home, whereas the other couple were let off on bail.
