DEHRADUN: A rude shock awaited the police in Dehradun when they forcibly entered a house in Clement Town area on Tuesday after having received complaints of a foul smell emanating from inside the house from the neighbours.
The police found a 25-year-old man and his wife aged around 22 lying dead in one of the rooms. What was even more shocking is that their newborn male child was found between their bodies on the floor, still alive. It was a heart- breaking scene that the police witnessed.
It was determined that the couple had died together of alleged suicide at least three days back. Their surviving infant, who is said to be six days old, miraculously survived without receiving any nourishment, all the while lying in between the corpses of his parents.
The infant was promptly taken to the Government Doon Medical College and Hospital (GDMCH), where doctors declared that although he was suffering from dehydration, he was safe.
Upon investigation by the police, the couple was then identified as one Kashif, originally hailing from Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur and his wife Anam. The wife had reportedly given birth to the baby boy a few days back, on June 8.
The couple was said to have moved into a rented house on Turner Road about four months back, according to the police. While the man was employed as a crane operator, his wife was a housewife. The couple was known to have got married around one year prior to the heart-wrenching incident.
Clement Town police station in-charge Shishupal Rana said, “When we broke the door, we found the bodies of the 25-year-old husband and his 22-year-old wife. We also found their 4-day-old baby there.”
Rana also disclosed that the bodies seemed to be two to three days old and that they immediately sent the baby to the hospital, where doctors are monitoring the health condition of the small infant.
An initial probe into the incident revealed that the woman was the second wife and there was a lot of tension in the marriage. The police said that the man was facing a lot of financial strain, which could have been a possible reason of the double suicide. They are suspected to have committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance, the police said.
The neighbours of the deceased couple claimed to have known that the couple had a baby a few days back. The deceased man was confirmed to be a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur and was an operater of a JCB or earth- moving machine.
Meanwhile, while speaking about the infant's condition, chief medical superintendent of GDMCH, Dr Yusuf Rizvi, said that the baby was brought to the hospital in a dehydrated state and was immediately put on fluids. “He is stable now and under observation in the ICU. There are no injuries or any physical issues with him," Dr Rizvi added.
