Early morning CBI raids in senior lawyers Indira Jaising and Anand Grover's residence

New Delhi: The CBI in the early morning on Thursday raided the residence of senior lawyers India Jaising and her husband Anand Grover’s residence. The lawyer couple is accused by the CBI of violating a law on foreign funding.

Reportedly, Indira Jaising in Delhi's Nizamuddin was raided at around 5 am along with the office of the NGO and another office in Mumbai.

Before this, a case was also registered Indira Jaisingh’s husband Anand Grover and his NGO Lawyers Collective on charges of an alleged violation of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA). The case was registered by the investigating agency was filed on the basis of a Home Ministry complaint. The complaint also includes Indira Jaising’s name as an accused. However, Jaisingh’s role has only been alleged by the CBI. As alleged by the investigating agency, Ms. Jaising had received a remuneration of Rs. 96.60 lakh from Lawyers Collective.

The accusation states that Anand Grover and his NGO had misused foreign contributions and spent the funds outside India. An allegation foiled by the Home Ministry states that the group had received over Rs. 32 crore between 2006 and 2014.

Reacting at the sudden raid by the CBI, Indira Jaising said, "Mr Grover and I are being targeted for the human rights work that we have done over the years."

The case registered by the CBI includes Indira Jaising’s contributions to the NGO when she was the Additional Solicitor General between 2009 and 2014. Notably, her foreign trip expenses at the time were sponsored by the NGO without Home Ministry approval.

The raids in the senior lawyers’ residence have, however, been condemned by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Kejriwal tweeted, "I strongly condemn CBI raids on well-known senior advocates @IJaising and Mr Anand Grover. Let the law take its own course but subjecting veterans who have all through their lives fought for upholding the rule of law and constitutional values is clear vendetta."
