GUWAHATI: On Monday 7 March, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that biennial elections to thirteen Rajya Sabha seats for 6 states.

The biennial elections across 6 Indian states will be conducted on 31 March as informed by the election commission.

The last date to file nominations is 21 March and the deadline for withdrawal of candidates is 24 March 2022 as stated by ECI. The counting of votes will be held on the same day of the election i.e. on 31 March.

According to the reports, the six states for biennial elections includes the northeastern states of Assam, Nagaland and Tripura and other Indian states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Kerala.

According to the official statement, the term of 13 members of Rajya Sabha elected from 6 states is due to expire on their retirement in April this year.

It is informed that elections in Punjab will be conducted for 5 seats where 3 seats will be registered in one poll and the rest of the two in another.

The statement further added the office term of the members to be elected to the states Council from Punjab shall be subjected to the Supreme Court's decision.

The commission said that important measures will be taken in order to closely observe and monitor the whole process of elections. The observers appointed at the election will ensure that elections are held in free and fairway.

The chief Secretariat is instructed by the election commission for the designation of a senior officer from the states to make sure that COVID-19 containment measures are put together accordingly at the time of making other arrangements.

On Sunday 6 March, due to reports of violence, the election body announced re-polling in 6 polling stations under 4 assembly constituencies in Manipur's Senapati and Ukhrul districts.
