EC’s Efforts Lead to Good Voter Turnouts in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura

NEW DELHI: The elections for the assemblies of the states of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura came to an end on Monday. All three states received a good number of voter turnouts thanks to the efforts of the Election Commission of India which worked hard to ensure that no voter was left behind in these elections. Meghalaya saw 76.57%, Nagaland received 85% and 90% of Tripura voters cast their votes in the assembly polls.

The Chief Election Commissioner of India, Rajiv Kumar acknowledged as well as complemented the efforts taken by the polling teams and officials across the three states, especially in the rough terrains of the region. Some of the polling stations of these states were beyond reach by any roads and the polling officials had to trek or climb to reach some locations while some others could be reached only by boats.

Rajiv Kumar also mentioned about the special steps taken by the polling authorities in the states to enable the higher participation of all the voters in the states, especially the senior citizens as well as the physically disabled citizens of the states.

“There has been an enthusiastic response and much goodwill generated by the citizens due to the above measures and polling parties left no stone unturned and are making arduous treks across difficult terrain to ensure that senior citizens, especially those above 80+ and the PwD, are able to avoid queues and vote from the comfort of their homes,” mentioned the Chief Election Commissioner of the country.

A total of 3553 applications for home voting were received from senior citizens aged more than 80 years in Meghalaya and 1807 applications from persons with disabilities with benchmark disability. In the state of Nagaland, a total of 3228 applications for home voting was received from senior citizens and 173 applications from persons with disabilities.

Apart from the usual recognition given to the early voters, especially the first-timers, the department had also set up polling stations managed completely by the youngest available polling official.
