EU delegates meet PM Modi to discuss over Jammu & Kashmir's situation

GUWAHATI: A 28-member delegation comprising Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from Italy, Britain, France, Germany, and Poland visited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Monday to discuss the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Union government has decided to allow a delegation of European parliamentarians to travel to Srinagar and see the situation in Kashmir.

According to reports, the delegation also met a few mainstream Kashmiri leaders, including former Minister Muzaffar Beigh from the PDP and winners of the Block Development Council polls in Jammu and Kashmir last week.

According to an official statement, “PM Modi expressed the hope that [the MEPs] have a fruitful visit to various parts of the country, including Jammu and Kashmir.” It also added that “Their visit to Jammu and Kashmir should give the delegation a better understanding of the cultural and religious diversity of the region of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh; apart from giving them a clear view of the development and governance priorities of the region.”

As per the statement of the current US Assistant Secretary of State, Alice Wells, the US State Department has raised concerns with the Indian Government regarding the detentions of local residents and political leaders, along with three former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir.
