Rajasthan: A 34-year-old woman sustained severe burns in Rajasthan after she jumped on the funeral pyre of her father during his cremation. Her father Damodardas Sharda, had died after contracting COVID-19. He died at a hospital in Rajasthan's Barmer district on Tuesday.

Police said that while Sharda was being cremated, his youngest daughter Chandra Sharda suddenly jumped on the pyre. Although she was pulled out of it by people around, she sustained around 70 per cent burn injuries.

As per the source, she was taken to a hospital nearby and later, referred to a hospital in Jodhpur for treatment.

Station House Officer, Kotwali police station, Prem Prakash said that Damodardas Sharda, 73, had three daughters. His wife died some time ago. He was admitted to the district hospital on Sunday after testing positive for COVID-19.

The police officer said that the youngest daughter had insisted to go to the crematorium for the last rites.

Meanwhile, 6,68,221 people are affected in Rajasthan by COVID-19. Out of these, 4,66,310 have recovered and 4,866 patients have died in Rajasthan. 1,97,045 patients are still in hospital and recovering. Read more

Assam recorded 4,475 cases on Tuesday (May 4), this is much higher than what the state had recorded at its peak last year. The maximum number of cases the state had recorded during its peak last year was around 3,500 cases. Kamrup (M) once again recorded the maximum number of cases with 1,417 people infected. The positivity rate stands at 8.14% as of May 4, Tuesday. Of the total 41 deaths reported on Tuesday, 15 are from Kamrup (M).
