MUMBAI: The Delhi Police in a major drug haul was successful in seizing 350 kilograms of Heroin worth 1725 crores from Nava Sheva Port in Maharashtra's Raigad district on Wednesday.

The drugs were seized from a contraband container filled with more than 20 tonnes of licorice roots which were soaked in Heroin.

The Delhi police came to know about the drug-loaded container in Nava Sheva after they arrested two Afghanistan nationals identified as Mustafa Stanikzai and Rahimullah Rahimi a few days ago. After frisking them the police were able to seize 312.5 kg of the narcotic drug methamphetamine and 10 kg of high-purity heroin valued at Rs 1,250 crore from their possession.

After interrogating them, they let the police know about the drug-loaded container in the port.

This haul by Delhi Police is one of the biggest drug haul this year.

"After obtaining a search warrant, a police team reached Mumbai on September 16 and inspected each and every stick of the consignment, weighing around 20,000 kg in total. The police got suspicious when they found that the color of some of the sticks of licorice root was darker than the others," said a Special Commissioner of Police, Delhi.

The team of Delhi Police examined each and every stick of licorice and found them to be soaked in heroin and the sticks which were soaked in heroin were darker than the sticks which were not. After this tedious exercise, the police seized the container, said the same Special Commissioner of Police.

The container traveled to many countries before coming into India. First, it came from Afghanistan and then went straight to a neighboring country which the police are yet to ascertain, and then it traveled to a middle-eastern country from where the drug was sent to the Nava Sheva Port. This whole water journey was done to avoid suspicion by the Police.

Most of the drugs which come to Mumbai or the nearby states come from Middle-eastern countries like Iran and Afghanistan. Last year in Mumbai, The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized Heroin worth more than 2000 crores making it one of the biggest drugs hauls in the country. The heroin was smuggled from Iran.

It is to be noted here that most of these drugs which come from the middle-eastern countries are supplied to these countries by the African nations.

A police source also added that this consignment was supposed to be transported to the makeshift factories in Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi, and Haryana and maybe some states in the Northeast for further refinement of the product to get a more refined narcotic which would have been distributed in the country.
