Home Minister Amit Shah: BJP received close to 53 lakh missed calls in support of CAA

Home Minister Amit Shah said that 52.72 lakh people called on BJP's toll-free number to express support for the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019.

To counter nationwide protests against CAA, the party had launched this campaign to drum up support for the Act. It had released a toll-free number of 8866288662 and asked those in support of the Act to dial in.

"This campaign is aimed to do away with misgivings about the CAA," BJP leader Anil Jain told reporters in New Delhi.

The number has been reportedly used for other purposes including some posts suggesting that it belonged to American media-services provider Netflix.

"Since y'day rumours are being spread that the number (toll-free number launched by BJP to garner support for #CitizenshipAct) belongs to some channel called, Netflix. I would like to clarify that the number never belonged to Netflix rather it is BJP's toll-free number," Shah said.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) aims to protect Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan by giving them Indian Citizenship. The legislation applies to those who were religiously persecuted. The cut-off date for those to be given citizenship in India has been fixed at, on or before December 31, 2014.
