Kanpur: A student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur died after falling into to the Ganga River at Ganga Barrage in Kanpur while trying to click a selfie.

The deceased was identified as Sejal Jain, an undergraduate student who was second year BS student in the Department of Earth Sciences at the prestigious institution in Kanpur.

According to statement from IIT Kanpur, Sejal along with her seven friends had gone to the Ganga Barrage where she crossed the safety railing of the bridge and reached the dangerous spot.

''Sejal accidentally slipped while taking a selfie and fell into the Ganga at Ganga Barrage," IT-K spokesperson, Girish Pant said in a statement.

Following the incident, the Nawabganj Police Station was approached and after their arrival, a search team of police was pressed into action and later they found Sejal Jain in an unconscious state.

''Sejal was rushed to the Hallet Hospital where she was declared brought dead,'' Pant added.
