Guwahati: It has come to light, somewhat shockingly, that 57 women and minor girls in a government shelter in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur have tested Covid-19 positive. Even more shockingly, five of the women, including 2 minor girls, are also among those who tested positive. According to reports, the two pregnant minors include an HIV positive girl. All the patients are now being treated in local hospitals.

Speaking to media, Kanpur DM Brahmdev Tiwari said that the women in question were sent by the Child Welfare Committees from Agra, Etah, Kannauj, Firozabad, Kanpur and were pregnant before they arrived at the shelter home. These are the cases under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences [POCSO] Act. Two other girls who were tested negative are also pregnant. They were also sent by the CWC team of Kanpur".

According to reports, one of the women at the shelter had tested positive a week ago, following which further tests were conducted. The test results found 33 more girls positive for the virus and twenty-eight more girls in the shelter home tested positive over the next two days.

Kanpur Commissioner Sudhir Mahadev also said that the girls were brought to the shelter home from various districts in accordance with the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and were pregnant before they reached. He said that an investigation will be carried out to see if any Government official is found to be guilty in the matter.

Meanwhile, the opposition Congress has taken potshots at the Yogi Adityanath Government for this occurrence. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday alleged that the matter shows that facts were being suppressed in these Government shelters.
