Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Condemns Udaipur Murder, Calls It An 'Act of Cowardice, Non-Islamic'

New Delhi: The Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid on Wednesday condemned the brutal murder of a man by two Muslim youths in Udaipur.

In an official statement, he termed the murder "an act against Islam, unlawful and inhuman".

"The inhumane incident of the murder of a man named Kanhaiya Lal by two persons named Riaz and Ghous, and that too in the name of the Holy Prophet, is not only an act of cowardice but an act against Islam, unlawful and inhuman. I, myself, and on the behalf of Muslims of India, with all the vehemence at our disposal, condemn this act," he said.

"Islam is a religion of peace. The life of Prophet Muhammad is full of incidents of humanity, kindness, compassion, and tolerance. If both the accused boys had studied the life of Prophet Muhammad, Quran, and Sharia, they wouldn't have committed this inhuman act,'' he added.

With this, the Jama Masjid's Imam joins other Muslim religious leaders such as Ajmer Dargah Deewan Zainul Abedin Ali Khan and Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind general secretary Maulana Hakeemuddin Qasmi in condemning the incident.

In Rajasthan's Udaipur's Dhanmondi police station area, two men on Monday killed a tailor Kanhaiya Lal for extending support to former BJP leader Nupur Sharma and posted a video on social media saying they did it to avenge the "insult to Islam".

Later, both the attackers were arrested hours after the incident, and presently, the case has been handed over to National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Significantly, several Muslim organizations in the country have strongly condemned the murder and appealed to maintain peace and not to take the law into their hands in any way.
