NEW DELHI: In an unfortunate incident in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, New Delhi a student sustained severe injuries after a bathroom ceiling collapsed in the university hotel.

The incident took place on Thursday 14 April in the Sabarmati Hostel inside the JNU campus.

The student was immediately rushed to the nearby Safdarjung Hospital after a part of the ceiling collapsed and fell on him.

The injured youth has been identified as a second-year student of BA (Bachelor of Arts) in German languages as informed by a senior university official.

The official on Thursday confirmed the incident and stated that because of dampness in the ceiling it collapsed and fell on the boy inside the bathroom.

Madhurima Kundu, the All Indian Students' Association Activist said that it is a clear case of criminal negligence by the dean of the students and hostel warden in maintaining proper infrastructure.

She added that the association has brought up the issue of hostel infrastructure and falling ceilings several times in front of concerned authorities but the JNU administration has repeatedly deviated from the matter mentioning about lack of funds.

The senior JNU official informed that the hostel warden took the boy to the Safdarjang Hospital near AIIMS Metro Station, New Delhi after he was found injured.

Meanwhile, he is undergoing treatment at the hospital and is reportedly doing well.

According to the official, the injured student had undergone an X-Ray surgery and the report shows everything is fine. However, a CT-Scan was also done, the reports of which are not yet received.

The official stated that there are infrastructure issues in the hostel as well as the university and mainly the old buildings.

As some of the hostels are getting old has a high risk of ceiling dampness which might lead to the occurrence of such incidents therefore they need to be repaired said officials.
