Kartik Purnima 2021: Longest Lunar Eclipse of the Century to Occur on 19 Nov, All You Need to Know

Kartik Purnima: The auspicious occasion of Kartik Puja is said to fall on 19 November this year and just like the previous year Kartik Puja this time too coincides with a lunar eclipse but this lunar eclipse will be different from any other as it will be the longest lunar eclipse of the century.

DATE AND TIMINGS:

• 12:00 PM on 18 November 2021- Starting of Purnima Tithi

• 02:06 PM on 19 November 2021- Ending of Purnima Tithi

According to the Hindu calendar, it is believed that on this day of Kartik Purnima devotees worship Lord Vishnu. People observe the day by taking dips in the holy river of Ganga and making numerous donations wherever possible.

The lunar eclipse occurring with Kartik Puja on 19 November will be a partial lunar eclipse however the shadow of earth over the moon will cover the eclipse completely. According to NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) the US space agency, the partial lunar eclipse will remain for the time period of 3 hours and 28 minutes and during this time the shadow of Earth will cover 97 percent of the Moon.

As it will be the longest lunar eclipse this year people from various parts of the world will be able to see the eclipse but it will not be visible for people from India as India will catch that eclipse at the ending part of the eclipse.

The penumbral lunar eclipse during which the earth covers the moon is said to take place at 11:32 am as per Indian timing and the partial lunar eclipse will start at midnight 12:48 pm. The eclipse will reach its highest peak at 2:32 pm and the ending time of the partial eclipse will be 4:17 pm. India being situated under the horizon will not be able to watch lunar eclipse in any of these timings.

The penumbral eclipse will be ending by 5:33 pm and this time is expected for moonrise therefore the people living in parts of north India and most of east India can have a look at a very small portion of the penumbral part of the lunar eclipse. The west and south India as a whole will not be able to catch any view of the eclipse.
