KCR to Change TRS Party Name to Go National

HYDERABAD: Telangana CM and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) boss K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR as he is generally known) will formally announce the name of his national party on the auspicious occasion of Dasara on Oct 5, (Dussehra is called Dasara in several South Indian states).

KCR seeks to reinforce his national ambition in the run-up to 2024 parliamentary election. Also, KCR will address a public meet in Delhi on December 9, where he is likely to unveil his "agenda for nation". He says the Gujarat model has failed and that he wants to provide an alternative to the people.

A resolution is expected to be moved on Dasara at a meeting of TRS party members, including seniors and top guns, at Telangana Bhavan. Though the party name has not yet been finalised, the party is known to be considering Bhartiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS), apart from other names. This is being done to ensure change of the regional political party's name Telangana Rashtra Samithi, often abbreviated as TRS to include Bharath (India) reflecting the change to a national stature.

The TRS party was founded on April 27, 2001, by politician K Chandrashekar Rao, with an agenda to create a separate Telangana state with Hyderabad as its capital. The party has been instrumental in carrying forth a long agitation for the granting of statehood to Telangana. This ambition was achieved in the 2014 Telangana Assembly Election, when TRS won majority of assembly seats and formed the first state government in Telangana. The president and founder of the party K Chandrashekar Rao became the chief minister of the state.

In the same year, in 2014 General Election, the party managed to win 11 seats making it eighth largest party in ,. The party also won 3 seats in Rajya Sabha. The next Telangana Assembly elections will be held on December 7 and the results will be declared on December 11.

According to sources in the TRS leadership, KCR will continue as chief minister even after launching a national party. After the formal changing of its name, the party's new name would be announced in Hyderabad by holding a massive public meeting in the state capital.

There is also speculation that some political parties might merge with BRS and then there are other leaders who are expressing willingness to work with BRS at the national level.
