GUWAHATI: A Kerala tourist boat carrying at several passengers capsized, killing approximately 21 persons on Sunday. According to reports, the double-decker boat flipped over because it was overloaded.

According to a police station officer, approximately ten passengers are presently being treated in various hospitals, and several have been returned after obtaining first aid.

Home Minister Amit Shah offered his condolences on Twitter and said “Deeply saddened by the tragic boat accident at Malappuram in Kerala. My condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

According to local reports, the majority of passengers were women and children who were stuck under the boat in muddy water and were rescued as soon as possible by local authorities.

Many of the passengers, according to survivors, were not wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.

According to a spokeswoman for the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), the incident occurred at 7 p.m. local time on Sunday in the state's Malappuram district, and a team from the National Disaster Response Force was on the scene.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan paid a visit to Taluk Hospital in Tirurangadi, Malappuram district, on Monday, where survivors were being treated.

In a previous incident that took place in  2021 an overcrowded boat carrying 90 people capsized on the Brahmaputra River near Jorhat, Assam.

Another severe boat accident occurred in Assam in 2022 when around 29 individuals collided with a post inside the river.

According to a National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report on Accidental Deaths and Suicide in India 2021, Uttar Pradesh leads the way with 69 deaths due to boat capsizes, followed by Odisha in third place with 58 deaths and Bihar in second place with 65 casualties.

The main causes of such accidents are a lack of safety precautions, with the majority of them turning fatal and passengers escaping by a whisker in certain cases.
