KOLKATA: If you are planning to travel to Kolkata anytime soon, one must be aware that the state government has decided to use colour codes on its iconic Metro Rail for ease of travel.

In a recent development, the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation has taken decision of assigning different colours to the Kolkata metros lines so that it becomes easier for passengers to identify directions and stations.

The corporation has assigned colours like green, blue, purple, pink and yellow to the city's metro corridors and their extensions which are in various levels of implementation.

The colours of the different metro lines will be assumed as the codes for the city's metros and their extensions. These colour-coded Kolkata Metro networks will be beneficial for people struggling to find ways in different stations.

This initiative by the Kolkata Metro will be helpful for people in identifying the travel direction and help them in switching to different stations. This move by the KMRC officials goes in line with Delhi Metro which is already colour coded.

On Saturday 5 March, the chief operations manager of Metro Railway made the important announcement about the order on corridor colours for the Kolkata Metro network.

Earlier the decision for the new colour codes was taken by RVNL (Rail Vikas Nigam Limited) and KMRC (Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation) who initiated changing the colours for the city's metro lines.

It may be mentioned that the metro running 31 kilometers from Subhas Dakshineswar was marked with black colour before this move of assigning various colours to metros.

Back on 24 October 1984, this metro regarded as the country's oldest began operating across 3.4 kilometers between Esplanade and Bhownipore.

It may be mentioned that the Metro smart cards to move from North-South and East-West metro corridors can be now recharged through the mobile application 'Metro Ride Kolkata' by CRIS (Centre for Railway Information System).

The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation has issued guidelines assigning colours to various metro lines and their extensions.
