Mamata Banerjee of TMC & Mayawati of BSP skip Congress-led Opposition meeting on CAA

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, as well as National President of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Mayawati, will stay away from Congress-led Opposition meeting on CAA convened in Delhi.

TMC supremo Banerjee accused the Left and Congress of violence and vandalism during a nationwide labour strike organised a few days ago, according to reports.

"It is no more possible for me to attend the meeting anymore. I was the first to launch an andolan (movement) against CAA, NRC," she told reporters. "What the Left and the Congress are doing in the name of the CAA-NRC is not a movement but vandalism".

The former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Mayawati explained her decision in a series of tweets where she accused of causing Congress-led Rajasthan government of causing defections in her party.

Both the leaders have vehemently opposed CAA calling it divisive and unconstitutional.

CAA aims to protect religiously persecuted Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan by giving them Indian Citizenship. The cut-off date for those to be given citizenship in India has been fixed at, on or before 31st December 2014.
