New Delhi: Champion weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has been approved Rs.40 lakh from the Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) to get proper training in Kansas, USA for her upcoming Olympic preparation. This comes after the MOC on Monday had an online meeting to discuss the financial proposals of over Rs.1.5 crore for athletes in six sports – shooting, badminton, boxing, para-sports, weightlifting and hockey who are a part of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).

Chanu will head to Kansas for a two-month training program along with her coach and physiotherapist. During the two-month training session, Chanu will undergo rehabilitation for her long-standing back injury which had forced her to miss the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games.

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju in his tweet said,

"It's our endeavour to ensure that our Olympic-bound athletes receive the best facilities. Our weightlifting champion @mirabai_chanu will travel to USA for her training. She will undergo rehabilitation for a long-standing injury. This is sure to help in her Olympic preparation,"

The MOC committee also sanctioned the proposal of shooters to Anjum Moudgil and Mairaj Ahmad Khan to procure their ammunition, equipment, and training requirements so that they can train at their own home ranges due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

For boxing, the committee has ratified a three-month overseas training program of Vikas Krishnan and his personal coach Ron Simms Jr in the USA.

For Badminton, the MOC has sanctioned the participation of Kidambi Srikanth, Saina Nehwal, and Lakshya Sen in the Danish Open Super 750. Further, a sanction has also been made for Sen's training in Denmark and participation in the SaarLorLux Open.

For Para-Sport, the coaching fees of Sharad Kumar's coach Yevhen Nikitin has been sanctioned for a period of one year till Tokyo Paralympics.

The committee has also sanctioned the proposal of the Indian men's hockey team to appoint physiotherapist RB Kannan for an initial period of three months after the departure of the foreign physio.
