NEW DELHI: The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind took to Twitter to pay his respects to the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on his 73rd death anniversary on Saturday. He said that the nation was grateful to him and that everyone should embrace his ideals of peace, non-violence, simplicity, purity of means and humility.

"On behalf of a grateful nation, my humble tributes to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi who embraced martyrdom this day. We should adhere to his ideals of peace, non-violence, simplicity, purity of means and humility. Let us resolve to follow his path of truth and love," he tweeted.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal too paid his tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. He said that we should take lessons from the eternal teachings and ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and let them guide us to work for the upliftment of the society. He wrote, "On #MartyrsDay, I pay my solemn tributes to 'Father of the Nation' #MahatmaGandhi. Let Bapu's eternal teachings and ideals guide us to work unabated for the upliftment of every section of the society."

Assam Health and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid his tribute to the Father of the Nation. He wrote, "Salutations on the death anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, who walked the path of lifelong truth and non-violence. The great scientist Albert Einstein wrote, "The coming generations will hardly believe that even such a man made of bone and flesh walked on the earth."

Martyr's Day or Shaheed Diwas is observed every year on January 30 in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi, who was assassinated at Gandhi Smriti in the Birla House by Nathuram Godse in 1948.
