Meghalaya Governor 'Warns' Centre Not to Suppress farmers' Movement

New Delhi: Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik on Sunday appealed the Centre not to suppress the farmers' movement but to listen to their concerns about the three farm laws.

The contentious three farm laws were passed during the last Monsoon Session of Parliament.

The former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, and Goa said, "I would warn that suppressing any issue in the world is not a solution. By pressing, it goes down for some time, but then it emerges with even bigger force."

Governor Malik recalled his own journey from the agriculture fields to power corridors, and said he understood the cause of the farmers.

Urging the government to find a solution for the farmers' issues, the Meghalaya Governor said that it was in the best interest of the nation, and that the government should engage in talks with the farmers.

Gesturing towards farmers protesting at Delhi's border area for over two months, Malik said the government should show 'greatness' and solve the issue keeping the interest of farmers in mind.

"The way farmers have been lying outside for 60 days, their family members moving back and forth between Delhi and their homes, the household work is stopped. The farmers have no sense of surety."

He also added that while the government is bound by its own compulsions, the government's duties surpass that. "The government has everything in its hands," he stated.

Meanwhile, Malik took a strong exception to the January 26 violence that happened in Delhi during farmers' tractor rally and said he is certain that those who violated law and order during tractor rally were not farmers.

He said that the violence that occurred in the national capital during Republic Day was due to miscreants, who were involved in the violence. He added that the farmers' protest has been quiet, with farmers enduring everything. "Farmers endured everything, they suffered, and they are not furious. I do not want to put them in that category. I will ask them to negotiate with intelligence with the government," he added.

The Governor however denied taking on the role of a mediator between the protesting farmers and Modi government, and said the government would solve it by itself.
