After hoisting the flag, Bhagwat also addressed the gathering and said that India got freedom after a lot of struggle and it needs to be self-reliant.

"Today is the day of pride and resolution. The country got freedom after a lot of struggle, it needs to be self-reliant," PTI quoted him as saying.

As per PTI, Bhagwat also said that the people should not ask what the country and society give them but should think about what they are giving to the country.

During this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the country on the 76th Independence Day. After this, he reached Rajghat and paid homage to Mahatama Gandhi and then he hoisted the tricolor from the ramparts of Red Fort.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that today we are facing two big challenges - corruption and nepotism. Corruption is hollowing the country like termites, we have to fight it. We have to raise awareness against 'nepotism' to realize the strength of our institutions, and to take the country forward on merit.

''When I talk about nepotism, people think that I am only talking about the political sphere. Unfortunately, this evil of politics has fostered nepotism in all institutions of India. This harms the talent of my country,'' he added.

Meanwhile, sweets were exchanged between Border Security Force (BSF) soldiers and Pakistan Rangers at the International Border at RS Pura in Jammu and Kashmir.

Besides this, Indian Army soldiers sang the National Anthem at Siachen Glacier after hoisting the National Flag on the occasion of 76th Independence Day.
