Mukul Rohatgi set to be the Attorney General of India Again

DELHI: Mukul Rohatgi, who served as the 14th Attorney General of India from June 2014 to June 2017, is all set for a second stint in the office from October 1. 

Rohatgi upon assuming the highest law office in the country on October 1, will be the 16th Attorney General of India. 

The present Attorney General of India KK Venugopal has declined an extension for his post and will now step down as the highest law officer in the country on September 30. 

According to sources all the official requirements are yet to be completed. 

The present AG KK Venugopal succeeded Rohatgi to be the 15th Attorney General of India after the ruling BJP showed disinterest in extending the period of three years to five years in the case of Rohatgi. Sensing the government's reluctance, Rohatgi tendered his resignation and embarked on an illustrious private practice where we also saw him fighting for Aryan Khan's bail in the much spoke about Drug on Cruise case where police found narcotics and other illegal substances from the possession of Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan's son. 

The outgoing Attorney General KK Venugopal also had an illustrious career as he fought as a special counsel of the Enforcement Directorate in the 2G spectrum case from which he later pulled himself out. Venugopal had also appeared in the court for former BJP Leader L.K. Advani in the famous Babri Masjid Demolition Case. 

It is worth mentioning that the to-be Attorney General of India Mukul Rohatgi has many feathers in his cap during his 44-year-old law career by appearing for the Government of Gujrat in the 2002 Gujrat Riots Case, defending the government on the Aadhar privacy in the Aadhar Case and also displayed his judicial flair in Justice Brijgopal Harikrishna Loya death case. 

Mukul Rohatgi was elevated to the level of Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court in 1994 at a very young age of 39 years and also served as the Additional Solicitor General of India from 1999 to 2004.
