MUMBAI: Art director of renown, Nitin Desai passed away on the morning of Wednesday. He reportedly died by suicide as he hung himself to death in his own studio near Mumbai.
According to reports, the art director had hung himself to death in his own ND Studios, which is located in Karjat. But no details have been known yet regarding the reason why he decided to take his own life a week before his upcoming birthday on August 9. He would have turned 58 years old in a week.
Nitin Desai had bagged the National Award winner for Best Art Direction four times. Desai was also credited for the beautiful sets for some of the blockbuster films of Bollywood including Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Jodha Akbar, Lagaan, Bajirao Mastani and several others.
In his over twenty years long career in this field, he had worked with several well-known filmmakers in the industry including Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Ashutosh Gowarikar
He opened his ambitious project, the ND Studios on the outskirts of Mumbai city in 2005 and this 52-acre project housed the sets of several popular Bollywood movies, including Jodha Akbar. Even the popular television reality show, Bigg Boss was hosted in this facility.
Nitin Desai had also tried his hand in the direction and production of films apart from his forte as an art director. He was the producer for a film named Desh Devi Maa Ashapura twenty years back. He was also the producer of multiple TV series during his career. His Marathi serial named Raja Shivchhatrapati turned out to be a blockbuster because of its wide appeal among the local audience. Another well-known project was the biopic of Shripad Rajhans titled Balgandharva in the year 2011. His directorial endeavours include Hello Jai Hind! in 2011 and Ajintha in 2012.
