Myriads of Farmers Assemble for 'Mahapanchayat', Massive Traffic Congestion in Delhi

New Delhi: Throng of farmers from innumerable corners of various states on Monday assembled at the Jantar Mantar to participate in a farmers' body named 'mahapanchayat', resulting in huge traffic jams in Delhi chiefly at the border lines of the national capital, inclusive of Ghazipur and Singhu.

As the police examined every vehicle in the country's capital and put up boundaries at all the entry spots, the throngs of the huge mass gave rise to traffic snarls and gridlocks all over the sites of Jantar Mantar and across the city.

Other than Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, farmers from southern states of India such as Kerela, Karnataka as well as from Maharashtra and Odisha also engaged in the 'mahapanchayat', urging the lawmakers of the legislation on the Minimum Support Price (MSP), issues pertaining to farm loan waiver and on other matters of agriculture.

They were lifting up slogans for unity among farmers and in opposition to the Central Government mentioning that the centre is "not fulfilling" its promises. Numerous farmers were also seen clutching flags in their hands and wearing caps proffered by the farmers' leaders.

Earlier in July 2021, a couple of hundred farmers arrived at Jantar Mantar to speak up against the three farm laws amidst the Monsoon session scheduled in the Parliament. Delhi police authorized them to hold a demonstration demanding the abolishing of agricultural laws after the farmers pledged that they would not stride towards the Parliament which was present in the Monsoon session.

Farmers had been marching since November 26, 2020, at various frontiers of the national capital in opposition to the three enacted laws: Farmers's Produce Trade and Commerce Act; The Essential Commodities Act; and the Farmers Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act.
