National Science Day 2022: Theme, History, Significance And All You Need To Know

The day 28 February is observed as National Science Day in India commemorating the significant discovery of the spectroscopy phenomenon 'Raman Effect' by Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, an Indian known physicist.

National Science Day was celebrated for the first time on this day in the year 1987 after NCSTC (National Council for Science and Technology Communication) in 1986 urged the government for the designation of 28 February as the National Science Day.

Why is National Science Day celebrated?

Indian popular scientist C.V Raman on this day in 1928 discovered the Raman Effect also known as Raman scattering. The Raman effect means a change in the wavelength of light that occurs when a light beam is deflected by molecules.

Venkata Raman has made an immense contribution in the field of light scattering and in the year 1930, he was honoured with the Nobel Prize for his innovation and discovery of the Raman Effect.

28th February holds great significance in the sector of science and technology of the country and it is celebrated at state and national levels with various science-related projects.

It is observed aiming for encouraging the country's youth to provide them a better understanding of science and develop its interest among the youths, the future of tomorrow.

On this day initiatives are taken in educational institutions and on other platforms to create awareness about the value of science and make people understand its related development.

What is the theme of National Science Day?

The theme for the celebration of this year's National Science Day is "Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for Sustainable Future."

The theme of National Science Day 2022 is launched by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh focusing a fold integrated lookout towards science and technology for a sustainable future.

Who is the father of science?

Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman is regarded as the father of science in the field of lights scattering that resulted in the remarkable discovery of the Raman Effect.

The notable scientist Raman remembered till now had done his graduated from the Presidency College in 1904 with a Gold medal in physics.

Initially, CV Raman started his career as an Assistant Accountant but his interest in science led to his work in the research work at IACS.

Later in 1917, he joined the Palit Chair of Physics at Calcutta University where he conducted research works on Cultivation of Science and carried out experiments on the scattering of lights.

Wishes & Slogans:

1. Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind. Happy National Science Day!

2. Two things are infinite - the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe. Happy National Science Day!

3. Science is a great antidote to the poison of enthusiasm and superstition. Happy National Science Day!

Quotes:

C.V Raman- "It is not often that the idealism of student days finds adequate opportunity for expression in the later life of manhood."

C.V Raman- "I would like to tell the young men and women before me not to lose hope and courage. Success can only come to you by courageous devotion to the task lying in front of you."

C.V Raman- "The essence of science is independent thinking, hard work, and not equipment. When I got my Nobel Prize, I had spent hardly 200 rupees on my equipment."
