National Youth Day also known as Yuva Diwas is celebrated every year in India on 12 January marking the birth anniversary of popular philosopher and Hindu monk, Swami Vivekananda.

The notable philosopher has made a great influence on the youths of the country and became one of the most eminent leaders, still remembered by the nation.

Swami Vivekananda was a chief disciple of the 19th-century Indian mystic Ramakrishna and he was born with the Bengali name of Narendranath Datta.

This year marks the 25th National Youth Day celebrated across the entire country through various events with the aim of promoting the value of Indian youth in forming a better society.

HISTORY:

In the year 1985, the Indian government made the announcement that the birthday of Swami Vivekananda will be observed as National Youth Day.

The step was taken with the purpose of motivating Indian youths in following the forever leader Swami Vivekananda for the prosperity of the country.

Swami Vivekananda was born on 12 January 1863 in Kolkata and took his last breath on 4 July 1902 in Belur Math of Howrah. He is a consistent inspiration for many in the country for his widespread contribution to the development of Indian society.

SIGNIFICANCE:

The birthday of Swami Vivekananda is observed nationally as Youth day to remember and value the massive contribution in Indian society made by Swami Vivekananda throughout his life.

National Youth Day is mainly observed to pay tribute to Swami Vivekananda and also celebrated with the objective to motivate and encourage the Indian youths in the progress of the entire country by working hard.

The day is meant to make the young generation realize their role and potentiality in building a well-developed society that will ultimately lead to the growth and well-being of the whole of India.

CELEBRATION:

Various types of events are organized in different Indian states that help in motivating and encouraging the youths. The events include cultural activities and educational competitions that bring harmony and unity among the people of the country.

The passionate followers of Swami Vivekananda organize various devotional ceremonies where they offer prayers and do meditation remembering the great philosopher and thinker of India.
