New Delhi:

The numbers are significantly higher in rural areas for primary and upper primary students. The percentage of girls going to school on foot is 62% while it is 57.9% in the case of boys.

When the data for rural and urban areas are looked at separately, the same trend is noticed. 61.4% of boys walk to school in rural areas and 57.9 % in urban areas, while the percentage of the girls stands at 66.5 and in rural areas and 62% in urban areas.

According to the NSO report, the second most preferred mode of travel is public transport (12.4%), followed by bicycle (11.3%). In rural areas, 11.3% of students use public transport to school, while 15.3% use it in urban areas.
