Nirbhaya’s Parents Who Waited 7 years for Justice Hail Hyderabad Encounter among Others

New Delhi: Amid questions being raised on the Hyderabad encounter, parents of Nirbhaya who was gang-raped in Delhi in December 2012 welcomed the action taken by Cyberabad police who gunned down the rape-murder accused of the Hyderabad Veterinarian Rape-Murder case in a police encounter on Friday.

Nirbhaya’s parents who lost their 23-year-old daughter said that unlike them, the Hyderabad rape victim’s parents won’t have to wait for seven years like they did as they sought justice for Nirbhaya.

Nirbhaya’s parents also added that if police had not taken prompt action and shot the accused straight away, they would have escaped and might not have been caught again.

"It is good that the police swung into prompt response and acted then and there. Otherwise, the accused would have escaped from police custody and it would have been difficult to catch them later. The efficiency of the police would have been questioned then,” Nirbhaya’s parents added.

Unlike Nirbhaya’s parents and like many others, Congress leader and Lok Sabha member Shashi Tharoor, however, said extrajudicial killings were not acceptable.

Taking to microblogging site Twitter, Tharoor tweeted, "Agree in principle. We need to know more, for instance, if the criminals were armed, the police may have been justified in opening fire preemptively.

Advocating caution, Tharoor said that people should not rush to condemn until details emerge. Extra-judicial killings are otherwise unacceptable in a society of laws, he added.

On the other hand, Rekha Sharma, National Commission for Women chief expressed satisfaction that the perpetrators were dead, but at the same time, she also stressed that justice should have been done through proper legal channels. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognizance of the incident and ordered an inquiry into the ‘encounter.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati also lauded the Telangana Police on Friday for its encounter killing of the four accused in the Hyderabad rape-murder case. She said that Uttar Pradesh and Delhi police can take inspiration from Telangana Police while slamming the Yogi Adityanath government in UP for not taking enough measures for the safety of the women.
