Nuh Violence: Haryana District Suspends Internet and SMS Services Amidst Yatra Tensions

Internet and SMS services were suspended in Haryana's Nuh district due to potential misuse for spreading rumors and disrupting peace during a denied yatra.

CHANDIGARH: In response to escalating tensions surrounding a proposed yatra, the district administration of Nuh in Haryana has taken the precautionary step of suspending internet and bulk SMS services from August 25 (evening) to August 29. The decision comes after the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) announced its intention to conduct the Brij Mandal Jal Abhishek yatra on August 28. This call for another yatra follows a recent incident of communal clashes in Nuh, where the previous VHP-led Braj Mandal Yatra was attacked by a mob, resulting in multiple fatalities including home guards and a cleric. Additionally, Gurugram experienced sporadic episodes of violence during this period.

The suspension of internet and SMS services aims to mitigate potential agitation and safeguard public and private property from damage. Officials express concerns about the misuse of social media and bulk messaging platforms to disseminate rumors and disrupt the tranquility of Nuh society. The Nuh Deputy Commissioner had earlier penned a letter to the Additional Chief Secretary, urging the suspension of mobile internet and bulk SMS services during the specified period.

The letter highlighted the upcoming Brij Mandal Shoba Yatra scheduled for August 28, organized by Sarv Jatiye Hindu Mahapanchayat. Given the history of unrest and property damage, authorities view the suspension of communication services as a necessary measure to prevent any untoward incidents. The denied permission for the yatra underscores the administration's concerns. The application for permission to hold the VHP's Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra on August 28 was turned down by the Nuh district administration on August 22.

During the 'mahapanchayat' convened by Hindu outfits in Pondri village on August 13, it was determined that the VHP yatra would recommence from Nalhar temple in Nuh. The yatra's route was planned to pass through Firozpur Jhirka's Jhir and Shingar temples within the district. The decision to resume the yatra from a significant religious site further added to the prevailing tensions.

In an effort to maintain public order and prevent the potential for further conflict, the suspension of communication services stands as a temporary measure in Nuh district. As the situation develops, authorities are keenly focused on ensuring the safety and harmony of the region while addressing the challenges posed by religious processions and related events.
