Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Police have detained a 17-year-old teen for allegedly selling away his wife to a 55-year0old man in Rajasthan. The teen, who had been married to his wife for a month, had gone to Rajasthan to work as a brick kiln.

The couple were married in July after which the teenager sold off his wife for Rs 1.8 lakhs.

A team of police from the south-eastern Rajasthan district of Baran rescued the 26-year-old woman from the clutches of the local villagers. The police informed that they were able to rescue the woman with "great difficulty" as the locals were refusing to let the woman go, citing that they had paid for her.

The inspector in charge of the Belpada police station in the Balangir district, Bulu Munda said, "In August, the couple went to Rajasthan via Raipur and Jhansi to work in a brick kiln. However a few days after his new job, the 17-year-old sold off his wife to a 55-year-old man from Baran district for ₹1.8 lakh."

The teen boy used up the amount on dining and bought a smartphone for himself. After he returned to the village, he claimed that he deserted his wife when he was asked about her whereabouts.

The family refused to believe him and filed a complaint in the local police station.

The police officer said, "We interrogated him and found out that he sold his wife. A team from Balangir went to Rajasthan to trace the woman. However, the locals there did not allow our team to take her back insisting that the woman has been bought for ₹1.8 lakh. We could get her back home with great difficulty."

On Friday, the boy was produced before a juvenile court. He was later sent to a correction home.
