Odisha: Wedding Party Car Crashes Into Canal, 7 People Killed

BHUBANESHWAR: In the early hours of Friday, a vehicle carrying a bridal party crashed into a canal in the Sambalpur district of Odisha, killing at least seven people and injuring four more. 

Ajit Khamari, Divya Loha, Saroj Seth, Sumant Bhoi, Subal Bhoi, and Ramakant Bhoi have been named as the deceased. The seventh deceased’s identity has not yet been determined. The Sambalpur hospital is currently taking care of the injured victims.

According to authorities, on Thursday night, a vehicle from Laddhara village in Jharsuguda district carrying members of the bridegroom's family and relations made its way to the Parmanpur neighbourhood inside the boundaries of Gham police station in Sambalpur. 

Following supper, some of them were returning back in an SUV when the driver lost control, crashing the vehicle into the Gham Canal at around two in the morning. One survivor reportedly remarked, "We busted open the windows and managed to escape."

It should be remembered that explosions at a fireworks competition in Kendrapara, Odisha, in November 2022 caused more than 30 injuries. The event happened in Kendrapara's Sadar police station's Balia Bazar. The local hospital was dispatched to treat the injured. 

Amrut Rituraja, the district magistrate for Kendrapada, said: "Explosions that occurred while a fireworks competition was taking place during an immersion ceremony at Balia Bazar resulted in more than 30 injuries. Everyone who was hurt was taken to the Kendrapara District Hospital.”

In a tragic turn of events, a firecracker explosion at a residence in the Khorda region of Odisha resulted in at least four fatalities and four serious injuries. The event took place roughly 40 kilometres from Bhubaneswar, the state's capital. 

Information indicates that the explosion occurred at a home where firecrackers were being made for the forthcoming Holi celebration.
