Outgoing Chief Justice of India Dipak Mishra Takes an Emotional Farewell from Office

This was indeed an emotional moment for the outgoing Chief Justice of India Dipak Mishra who on Monday, attended the last court proceeding along with his successor Ranjan Gogoi. The new Chief Justice, justice Ranjan Gogoi will take over as Mishra’s successor on October 3.

Although the three justices, justice Gogoi, CJI Mishra and Justice A.M. Khanwilkar were sitting on the bench for the last time together, it said that it will hear no urgent mentioning of matters on Monday as this happens to be the last day at work for CJI Mishra.

Making the atmosphere even more emotional on the last day, a lawyer broke into a song wishing for the long life of the outgoing CJI. But Mishra stopped the lawyer midway, saying he was “responding from the heart” but will speak from his mind in the evening. This statement by the retiring justice shows the emotional side of him.

The lawyer had just started singing “Tum jiyo hazaron saal...” when Mishra stopped him and said, “Presently I am responding from my heart. I will respond from my mind in the evening.”

Notably, Justice Dipak Mishra took charge of the Chief Justice office almost year ago on August 28, 2017 and will forever be remembered for his historical verdicts on Aadhaar and homosexuality during the last 10 days.

Justice Misra was appointed the additional judge of the Orissa High Court on January 17, 1996 and then became a permanent judge on December 19, 1997. Later, he assumed charge of the office of Chief Justice of Patna High Court on December 23, 2009 and Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on May 24, 2010. Then before being the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, he was elevated as a judge of the apex court on October 10, 2011.
