Over 6 Lakh Indians Gave Up Citizenship in Last 5 Years, Govt Informs Lok Sabha

The data further revealed that in 2019 highest number people gave up their citizenship as compare to 2020 where number of such people is less.

New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai has informed the parliament that so far over six lakh Indians have given up their citizenship in the last five years.

The minister on Tuesday in a written reply quoted a information by the Ministry of External Affairs which states that a total number of 1,33,83,718 Indian nationals are living in foreign countries.

''1,33,049 Indians gave up Indian citizenship in 2017, 1,34,561 in 2018, 1,44,017 in 2019, 85,248 in 2020 and 1,11,287 till September 30, 2021,'' he added.

The data further revealed that in 2019 highest number people gave up their citizenship as compare to 2020 where number of such people is less.

The minister further apprised the parliament that till September 30, 1,11,287 Indians gave up their citizenship.
