NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) took a major decision by removing the PhD degree from the list of mandatory qualifications to teach in Central University.

According to reports, the Commission is planning to bring some lateral entry processes for professors in colleges and universities in order to have industry experts in the field.

In addition to this, some of the special positions including the associate professor in practice and professor in practice are also in the process to get introduced as informed by sources.

The statutory board of education plans to employ teachers with knowledge of the industry so that this can be beneficial for the youths.

The commission has further informed that the decision taken in view of allowing experts in the field of industry activities and on-ground experiences to share their knowledge and experiences with students.

It may be mentioned that earlier, PhD degree played a very major role in getting the job of professor in the central university.

At the time of recruiting candidates for the universities, the commission will make sure that the candidate has the industry experience and qualifications.

However, the UGC has not yet made it clear whether the special positions mentioned will be temporary or permanent for the newly recruited.

It is reported that such rules are likely to be kept flexible depending on the requirement of the institutes and the experts.

It is also likely that the mentioned special positions could be part-time. Most notably, the plans are just in their emerging stage and nothing about the update is made as to the final move.

A committee in this regard will be established to work out the details and a formal announcement will be soon made about the same.
