Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced a Rs 1,000 crore relief for Cyclone Amphan hit West Bengal where at least 80 people have been killed.

The Prime Minister, who held a review meeting to the state's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, announced that a sum of Rs 2 lakhs would be given to the next of kin of the persons who are killed during the cyclone and a sum of Rs 50,000 would be given to those who were injured in the destructive storm that left a trail of death and destruction across the state.

Modi, speaking from West Bengal's Basirhat, assured that that the entire country stands with the Bengal in these difficult times. "A team will be sent by central govt to conduct a detailed survey about the damages caused due to Cyclone Amphan and the current situation of the affected areas. All aspects relating to rehabilitation & reconstruction will be addressed. We all want West Bengal to move ahead", Modi added.

It is pertinent to mention here that the PM landed in Kolkata earlier today to conduct a survey of the damage that has been caused by Amphan that hit West Bengal on Wednesday, causing considerable damage. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who accompanied the PM, has said that the cyclone should be treated as a 'national disaster' by the centre. Meanwhile, the state's BJP unit has claimed that at least 5 lakh people have lost their homes in the aftermath of the storm.
