Prime Minister Modi on Saturday celebrated the festival with the jawans of the Western border, continuing the tradition of spending Diwali with soldiers since 2014. Addressing the soldiers, Modi saluted the valor of the security forces as he remembered the Battle of Longewala. Sending warning signals to Pakistan and China, he said the entire world knew that India won't compromise on its interests even one bit. The prime minister, addressing troops at the Longewala border, said that the whole world felt troubled by the "expansionist forces" that show a "distorted mindset".

Modi was accompanied by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Bipin Rawat, Border Security Force (BSF) Director General Rakesh Asthana and Army Chief MM Naravane at Longewala, originally a BSF Post and a strategic point en route to capturing vast tracts of land and also a pivotal theatre of war in engaging India on the western front during the 1971 War.

Prime Minister Modi also appealed to the people to light a 'diya' as a "salute to soldiers". He also said that words cannot do justice to the sense of gratitude for their exemplary courage.

"This Diwali, let us also light a Diya as a #Salute2Soldiers who fearlessly protect our nation. Words can't do justice to the sense of gratitude we have for our soldiers for their exemplary courage. We are also grateful to the families of those on the borders," he tweeted.

Modi also tweeted an audio clip of his recent 'Mann Ki Baat' broadcast in which he had first given a call to citizens to light a 'diya' for soldiers in Diwali.

After Modi's appeal, the BJP urged people to post a photo with 'diyas' for soldiers on social media.

"This Diwali, PM Narendra Modi has launched this special campaign to let us express our gratitude for our bravest of the brave soldiers. Request you to post a photo with diyas for our soldiers using #Salute2Soldiers on social media," the party said.
