New Delhi: Hackers broke into the official Twitter account of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the wee hours of Sunday.

The hackers also tweeted a spam tweet from @narendramodi at 2.11 am on Sunday (December 12).

"India has officially adopted bitcoin as legal tender. The government has officially bought 500 BTC and is distributing them to all residents of the country," the tweet read.

The tweet got deleted in barely two minutes. The second tweet came at 2.14 pm, which was a copy of the first one and it this too was deleted soon.

The Prime Minister Office (PMO) in a tweet informed that Modi's account was hacked for a while and PMO also that any tweet made during this period should be 'ignored'.

"The Twitter handle of PM @narendramodi was very briefly compromised. The matter was escalated to Twitter and the account has been immediately secured. In the brief period that the account was compromised, any tweet shared must be ignored," PMO India said in a tweet.

Reportedly, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) is on the job and is trying to identify the source of the hacking incident.
