NEW DELHI: On Tuesday 18 January the AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) announced Bhagwant Mann as its chief ministerial candidate for Punjab elections 2022.

The decision was taken after a televote in which the people were asked to phone in their choice for the top post. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal informed that Mann got 93% of the votes from people throughout the selection process.

Bhagwant Mann is a well-known personality in Punjab and a renowned comic known widely in the state.

Mann started his political career with the People's party of Punjab led by Manpreet Singh Badal by joining the party in the year 2011.

He is the party's face in the parliament and a two-time MP (Member of Parliament) from Sangrur Lok Sabha.

In the year 2012, he took part in the Assembly polls from Lehra of Punjab but it was an unsuccessful attempt as he failed to make the position in view of fewer votes.

He then became a member of the AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) in 2014 and was elected by the party members to Lok Sabha from the Sangrur constituency.

Mann also contested in the 2017 Punjab polls but lost to Sukhbir Singh Badal who is a member of Akali Dal but he succeeded in keeping a hold of his position of Sangrur seat in the 2019 general election.

Mann was often targeted by his political rivals for his addiction to alcohol therefore in 2019 he took an oath at the party meet saying that he will never choose alcohol for any reason and will stop drinking.

He had also taken the pledge that he will be completely devoted to serving the people of the state and utilize his time only for the purpose of the betterment of society.

Mann is most known for his speaking ability in the parliament and this helps him receive enormous support from various leaders of the party and also from the general public.
