Politicians condemn journalist Arnab Goswami's arrest

Mumbai: With the arrest of Arnab Goswami, promoter and Editor-in-Chief of Republic TV on Wednesday morning, politicians around the country started tweeting for justice for Arnab.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah condemned his arrest, saying that, "This attack on the free press must be and WILL BE OPPOSED."

He tweeted: "Congress and its allies have shamed democracy once again. Blatant misuse of state power against Republic TV & Arnab Goswami is an attack on individual freedom and the 4th pillar of democracy. It reminds us of the Emergency. This attack on free press must be and WILL BE OPPOSED."

Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal also condemned the arrest and said, "Vendetta politics should be stopped and freedom of press should be maintained in Maharashtra by releasing Mr Goswami immediately."

Calling it "like the emergency days in Maharashtra, Assam Finance, Health, Education and PWD Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma strongly condemns this "shameless" politically motivated act.

The arrest of Goswami is an attempt to stifle free voice, said the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu.

Goswami was arrested on Wednesday morning by Mumbai police on charges of abetment to suicide of Anvey Nayak, who was a vendor for Republic TV. Goswami and two others owed around Rs 5 crore to Nayak.
