NEW DELHI: Taking the protest one step ahead the protesting wrestlers have said that they will throw their medals in the Ganga and then take a fast until death after they were forcefully evacuated by Delhi police from the place they were protesting in.
The protests started several months back with multiple female wrestlers accusing being harassed by the president of the Wrestling Federation of India and member of parliament Brij Bhusan Sharan Singh and demanding action against him. Although the protests gradually intensified, no action was seen from the side of the central government. Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sangeeta Phogat, Sakshi Malik and several others were detained by Delhi Police on Sunday when they attempted to move towards the new Parliament building for 'Mahila Mahapanchayat'. Several police personnel were seen dragging them forcefully and detaining them.
After this incident, Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat announced that they will throw their medals in the holy river of Ganga in Haridwar. They also announced that they will take this action at 6 PM on Tuesday and thereafter sit for an indefinite hunger strike at the India Gate.
In a statement issued by the wrestlers, they mentioned the medals to be their lives and souls, and there will be no reason for them to live on after throwing them in the river so they will be undertaking a fast until death at India Gate after that. They also mention that the government paid no heed to their requests and that they decided to go with the accused and not the players. They also mentioned that the protest was far from over and asked for support from players and other supporters in their fight for justice.
After CSK’s win in IPL on Tuesday, Sakshi Malik congratulated the team and its captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni saying that it was good to see at least some sportspersons getting respect in the country.
