JALANDHAR: Santokh Singh Chaudhary, the 76-year-old Member of Parliament from the Jalandhar constituency of Punjab passed away after suffering a heart attack on the morning of Saturday. He was participating in the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra between the towns of Phillur and Goraya when this incident took place.

According to reports, Santokh Singh Chaudhary was walking right next to the former head of the Congress party, Rahul Gandhi when he collapsed. He was shifted to a medical facility with two MLAs Rana Gurjeet Singh and Vijay Inder Singla when the incident took place and the yatra was suspended for the day. He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital and the body was taken to his residence in Jalandhar.

Rahul Gandhi expressed his shock at the sudden death of the leader and took to Twitter to express his grief. "Shocked by the sudden demise of Shri Santokh Singh Choudhary. He was a down-to-earth hardworking leader, a good person and a strong pillar of the Congress family, who dedicated his life to public service from youth Congress to Member of Parliament. I express my condolences to the bereaved family," Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

Vikramjit Singh Chaudhury, the son of the late MP is the MLA from the Phillaur constituency and a member of the Congress party.

Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the head of Congress in Punjab mentioned that the yatra will remain suspended till the last rites of the fallen leader are completed. "My deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, friends and supporters. I am in shock but Chaudhary Saab's resolve will always be a source of inspiration to me," he mentioned.

Several other leaders of the Congress party including the General Secretary in charge of communications Jairam Ramesh and president Mallikarjun Kharge also offered their condolences on the death of the MP.
