Punjab Extends Restriction On Mobile Internet Services Till March 21 Amid Crackdown Against Amritpal Singh

CHANDIGARH: As the search for pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh entered its third day, Punjab on Monday extended the suspension of mobile internet services till March 21 at noon.

The news comes hours after Punjab Police said that Amritpal Singh's uncle and his driver had turned themselves in to them on Sunday evening.

According to a statement from the Punjab government's department of home affairs and justice, "all mobile internet services, all SMS services (except banking and mobile recharge), and all dongle services provided on mobile networks, except the voice call, have been suspended until March 21 (12:00 hours) in the interest of public safety."

Prior to Monday noon, mobile internet and SMS services throughout Punjab were shut down.

Amritpal Singh, the leader of Waris Punjab De, was "still on the run," according to Punjab Police, who said an effort to capture him was in progress. The Waris Punjab Division head was not arrested, contrary to what Amritpal Singh's attorney said on Sunday.

According to Imaan Singh Khara, the legal counsel for Waris Punjab De, Amritpal Singh has been detained by the Punjab Police at the Shahkot police station. Lawyer Imaan Singh Khara asserted that Amritpal Singh had been detained at Shahkot Police Station, defying Punjab Police's assertion that he was still at large and that search operations were ongoing to find him.

The police are planning to assassinate the pro-Khalistan leader in a "fake encounter," according to Amritpal Singh's attorney. However, Amritpal Singh was described as "still on the run" by Punjab Police, who denied all of Imaan Singh Khara's allegations.

Even as the police continue their special operation to apprehend Amritpal Singh, the situation in Punjab has remained tense. Amritpal Singh's supporters were caught with a sizeable haul of weapons and ammunition by the Punjab Police.

In a case involving illicit weapons, a new FIR was filed against him and his colleagues. Those trying to disturb the calm and maintain law and order in the state have also been arrested by the police as a preventative measure.
